Where am I?

Despite the hard wooden floor, she was so drained she fell asleep.

Chapter 31

It was nearly morning when Luke, Eli, and the girls made their way back to the house. Their jaunt to Twisted turned out to be a lot more than they’d anticipated — in many ways. But in the end they’d taken out three Lythanons, learned the underlying reason for their fight, and all survived to tell about it.

Luke was so exhausted he thought he was seeing things. Is that Melinda’s Jeep, or just wishful thinking? He rubbed his eyes. Still there.

Then he saw Quinn sitting on the ground leaning against the tire.

“Luke, we’ve got a little situation,” Quinn said as he stood up. “Um, your girlfriend is in Pleasantwick.”

“What?!” His eyes narrowed. “Why? How?”

“She and her friend were stranded here for the night. Melinda got the door open … and somehow she was able to go through the portal,” Quinn explained. Then he shook his head. “Luke, how is that even possible?”

“I don’t know how. But is she okay?” Luke asked. “Where exactly is she?”

“She’s fine. She’s being held in the mahogany room. Adam has been in to talk to her.”

“She’s being held? Like a prisoner? What did Adam say to her?”

“Not sure, but he said he wants you to clean up this mess and get her out of there. Her friend too. She’s asleep on the couch, with a little help from Cora,” Quinn said. “This place gets busy at night. We need access to the portal without commoners around.”

“But why were they stranded here? Weren’t you watching her?” Luke asked.

“I was keeping an eye on her, not her car,” Quinn answered. “It looks like someone disconnected the battery.”

“Would you like me to take her friend home, while you go to Melinda?” Eli asked.

“I can go with Eli.” Jillian chimed in.

“And I’ll tell the Wickers what we found out from Sam,” Bethany said.

“That would be great. Thanks, everyone.” Luke turned, heading straight for the portal.

“Any idea where her friend lives?” Eli called out.

“No,” Luke answered, not turning back.

“No problem. I’ll figure it out,” Eli mumbled.
